Speech & Language Program

PEI provides diagnostic and treatment services for children within the community by licensed, master’s level clinicians that are highly trained in the areas of oral deaf education, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ACC) and bilingual therapies (Spanish/ English). PEI offers both in-person and teletherapy treatment services.

Speech & Language Services are covered by most insurance carriers and through the Family Infant Toddler Program (FIT).

PEI works with children who:

  • have speech and language delays, regardless of their ability to hear.
  • may be dealing with apraxia of speech, brain injury, articulation delays, learning disabilities, chronic otitis media, auditory comprehension delays, social language delays, and autism.
  • need speech and language development through an age-appropriate evaluation and treatment.

One aspect of an effective speech and language pathology program is a comprehensive evaluation. At PEI, testing is completed based upon the child’s age, diagnosis, and language(s) spoken in the home. Testing and evaluation help our Speech and Language Pathologists to fully assess the child’s speech, language and oral motor skills. Our skills assessment evaluates:

  • Receptive and expressive language
  • Fluency (smooth speech and without effort)
  • Voice and resonance (vocal quality)
  • Oral motor skills
  • Articulation (sound production and intelligibility)
  • Cognitive skill (clear thinking)

After testing, the speech and language pathologists will work with you to set up your child’s treatment plan. The treatment plan may consist of services provided on frequent (weekly/biweekly) or consultative basis, parent coaching options, as well as activities to be completed at home.

If you are unsure if your child’s speech and language skills are normal for their age, please refer to our Speech and Language Milestones Guide to better understand the skills a child should have at various ages.
