For Children
Presbyterian Ear Institute is New Mexico’s center for excellence in pediatric hearing and speech services. PEI helps deaf and hard of-hearing children develop and strengthen auditory and oral communication skills using the advanced technology of cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. The world becomes a much bigger place when deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals can participate more fully in all aspects of life.
Using advanced technology, PEI serves children and their families to provide:
- Early identification and diagnosis of hearing loss
- The longest running pediatric cochlear implant program in New Mexico
- Early intervention for infants
- Oral deaf education to teach deaf and hard-of-hearing children to listen, learn and speak
- Speech and Language Therapy for children ages birth – 18 years
- Research on perception of sound, deafness and communication
- Education and public awareness regarding deafness
Started as a research and pediatric cochlear implant program, PEI has evolved to include a number of programs for the early identification, early intervention and education of children with hearing loss. The ultimate goal is to help deaf and hard-of[1]hearing individuals realize their unlimited potential and allow them to actively participate in the hearing and speaking world.
