Kendall's Story

Having a baby is one of the most exciting moments of your life! As I prepared for the arrival of my precious little girl, all I could think of was pink. Pink dresses, head bands, car seat covers, socks, and bows! What I didn't know, is that I would be ordering pink sparkly hearing aids three months after she was born.

The suspicion of Kendall's hearing loss began with the newborn hearing screening. I didn't think much of it as we had no record of hearing loss in our family. When she didn't pass again, I was still certain this was just a misunderstanding. I held the referral to Presbyterian Ear Institute in my hand, contemplating if I should go. I had several family members with several different opinions. This was something I couldn't chance, so Kendall and I were introduced to PEI when she was just 4 weeks old.

Dr. Stephanie Bourn has been exceptionally accommodating and welcoming to us. I've cried numerous times in her office and have wept inconsolably in moments. She's always been so loving and reassuring. We have caught it early! Kendall has the same potential to be amazing, as does everyone else. We have always received exceptional care from PEI. Tests were always repeated for accuracy. More than one audiologist has reviewed hearing results as Kendall's hearing loss became more severe. I can honestly say everyone I have met at PEI has given us their absolute best. They have always educated me on all of my options.

I always tell family and friends I'm so grateful for the doctors, audiologists, speech and language pathologists, and all staff, who dedicate their lives to research and study to help others. I can be joyful in the midst of hardship because I know Kendall will be given great care and a head start education through PEI preschool. Every parent is entitled to make their own decisions for their children, but I couldn't be more grateful I decided to show up. PEI took it from there.
