Speaker 1: Well, imagine not being able to hear what I'm saying right now or what Shelley's saying or anything at all. Well, for many kids, that is a reality but there's a place right here in New Mexico that is truly making miracles happen. It's the Presbyterian Ear Institute. Speaker 2: Breaking the silence, it's truly what they do at the Presbyterian Ear Institute. Emma Patton: Once I got to PEI, a miracle just happened. Speaker 2: The miracle of hearing. For all these kids they experienced that miracle. Emma Patton: Once you have that implant turned on, it's like a whole crowd. Speaker 2: This is a cochlear implant. A magnet is surgically placed under the skin and the device is attached to it, electronically stimulating the eighth nerve, which is the hearing nerve. Speaker 4: It's one of the few things that I do that I think it is truly a miracle. Speaker 2: Four year old Adam agrees. Adam Burianek: I couldn't hear nothing at all. I didn't even talk. Speaker 2: Until he got his cochlear implant. The same for eight year old Emma. Emma Patton: First time I heard my mom, she sounded like a robot. Speaker 2: Now Emma's mom sounds like every other mom, but one thing these kids do hear a lot from other kids is, what is that thing on your head? Adam Burianek: I say, it help me hear. Speaker 2: It takes years to teach the kids how to use their implant effectively and excel in school, so they can grow up and choose whatever career they want. Speaker 6: To become a news reporter, to become a physician, to become a lawyer, to become anything they want to be. Speaker 1: The cochlear implants are expensive, about $75,000 and some kids need two of them, and there is a tuition to attend the Ear Institute. So on Friday, August 17th Mercedes-Benz of Albuquerque is holding a golf tournament that Sandia Golf Club to benefit the Institute. The cost is 250 per person.
