Speaker 1: Action 7 News live at six. Coverage you can count on. Shelly Ribando: Telling your kids you love them is priceless, so when they can't hear you and you don't even know it, it's heartbreaking when you find out. Doug Fernandez: But now for an Albuquerque mom, her two year old can hear her say those three special words. Speaker 4: Good job. Speaker 5: Ava [Kacias 00:00:22] learns and plays like any two year old, but she's not just any two year old. She was born with profound hearing loss. Annie: It was devastating, and I feel bad saying that because there's things that could be so much. Speaker 5: So Annie and Ava were referred to the Presbyterian Ear Institute. Annie: Amazing. Speaker 5: That's how Annie describes the school that told her they can give Ava the gift of hearing. Annie: It was one of those, I was excited, but I was like, "Could this really happen?" Speaker 5: So Ava had two cochlear implants surgically attached to the back of her head. Annie: There was a little bit of hesitation. Of course, as a mother, I don't want to put my child through that, even though it's probably harder on me than her. Speaker 5: Then it was time to test those implants. Sure, we heard them, but did Ava? Annie: [crosstalk 00:01:09]. Speaker 5: The head turn toward the sound means yes, Ava heard it. Then, it's mom's turn. Annie: Hi. Hi, Ava. Hi. Speaker 5: Barely holding back tears, Annie sees her daughter reacts to her voice. Annie: Hi, Ava. Yeah. Hi! Speaker 5: Then it's dad's turn. Speaker 7: Ava. Ava. Annie: Do you hear daddy? Speaker 5: Their apprehension for Ava gone. Annie: It was an emotional experience for sure. Speaker 5: Now the only difference between Ava and most other two year olds, her cochlear implants. Annie: Once she started hearing, she got a little more excited. Speaker 5: More excited about talking and playing with her cousin. But for mom, this is what excites her most. Annie: Her hearing me tell her I love her is amazing. Doug Fernandez: And Mercedes-Benz of Albuquerque is sponsoring a golf tournament benefiting P.E.I.
